A MAJOR study of the impact of alcohol misuse in Australia has put the annual cost of excessive drinking at $36 billion, along with a massive human toll.

More than 70 per cent of the nation's adult population would be "negatively affected" by someone else's drinking in a year, according to the research by the Australian Education and Rehabilitation Foundation (AER Foundation).

The human toll includes 70,000 Australians who would be the target of alcohol-related assault in a year - 24,000 of these would be adult victims of domestic violence.

There would also be 20,000 children across Australia who would become victims of substantiated alcohol-related child abuse.

"Behind each of these statistics lie personal, family and community problems that stem from the harms associated with the drinking of others," said AER Foundation director Reverend Tim Costello.

Related Coverage
Booze and thugs go hand in hand
Herald Sun, 10 hours ago
Action on alcohol changes town
The Australian, 11 Jul 2010
More SA pregnant women drinking
Adelaide Now, 7 Jun 2010
Mums ignore booze risks
Herald Sun, 7 Jun 2010
Older siblings influence binge drinking
Adelaide Now, 25 May 2010

The only other one was Baba Ram Dass (Dr Richard Alpert) describing how he felt on LSD when he spoke to a scientific audience about love.

I have passages in Project Nirvana and The Transcendent Ape that describe this sort of experience. At the end of the Transcendent Ape I spoke of the need for brain scientists to feel the workings of their brain from inside when they do their experiments. How much better to use your right hemisphere to heal and repair the world.

But for most people getting to that space (short of a very fortuitous stroke or an epileptic fit, or psychedelic plant ingestion — all temporary and fraught with dangers) is the greatest riddle of the universe… However, art, nature, music, meditation, any contemplation of beauty, animals, anything that shuts down the chatter of our mind can take us a step closer to at least a human approximation of "nirvana"... About the worst thing one can do is to go to some sort of a priest or a spiritual “teacher”…

Similar excerpts from my two books:

A woman patient with a terminal breast cancer received LSD (whose effect is similar to psilocybine but stronger, with a longer-lasting "trip") to relieve her pain and anxiety. Coming out of her first session she breathed deeply and said: "You know, for the first time, I can breathe again." Later she described her impressions:

I cannot remember the logic of the experience, but I became poignantly aware that the core of life is love. At this moment I felt that I was reaching out to the world — to all people — but especially to those closest to me. I wept long for the wasted years, the search for identity in false places, the neglected opportunities, the emotional energy lost in basically meaningless pursuits...

From my book "The Transcendent Ape", p. 101 also see my blog "The Transcendent Ape"
http://patrushevevolution.blogspot.com/

Memories from his childhood began to float into his consciousness, without disturbing the calm sea of his awareness or interrupting the gentle pulsation of his mantra. Snippets of dreams and nightmares were rising from the depths of his subconscious, disjointed and now somehow powerless. Images that ordinarily would have woken him shivering in a cold sweat were now dissolving painlessly, neutralized by the healing peace he felt within. Richard had a sensation as if his chest was expanding endlessly in one all embracing inhalation, which made him feel huge, as big as the universe itself. But at the same time he knew that this was an illusion and that his breathing was still, or almost still. The bright point of light with which he identified his consciousness was incomprehensibly spilling beyond the barriers of his skull, filling the whole world with a radiant and uniform glow.
He could not think at that moment, and only had a sensation of rising — or falling — precipitously. He did not know how long this ascent — or descent — lasted. When he could think again, words formed in his mind, “Life is joy, and peace, and light … And I am that, too...”

“Doctor,” he said, “I feel new, reborn. I feel… happy. You know something,” he said, feeling mildly embarrassed, “Life is joy.” (From "Project Nirvana", pp. 26 - 29)

Just a lot of Bull?

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_c1PMtZ84MPw/R-yYD2WuP9I/AAAAAAAABA4/4i6jSJ9r2TI/s320/red+bull+2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5182684463094448082" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_c1PMtZ84MPw/R-yX-GWuP8I/AAAAAAAABAw/rCYo4bcQm6M/s320/red+bull+1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5182684364310200258" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_c1PMtZ84MPw/R-yX3mWuP7I/AAAAAAAABAo/bW86gEG3CQ8/s320/red+bull.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5182684252641050546" />
I will provide items on healthy substitutes to commercial Enegry drinks that can also give you a kick without destroying your health -- or your pocket...

Energy drinks: good or bad?
Energy drinks such as Red Bull have become popular in the UK as a quick energy boost or as an alcohol mixer.
Energy Drink
But some experts claim these high energy cocktails come at a price to our health and even say they should be banned. We take a look at the arguments for and against energy drinks.
According to the slogan, Red Bull gives you wings. But what else exactly does Red Bull and other energy drinks provide? Questions have been raised over the safety of energy drinks ever since we learned of their caffeine content. And despite claims to improve performance, stimulate the metabolism and increase concentration, the sale of Red Bull is not permitted in Denmark, Norway, France and Uruguay. So why is it, and other energy drinks, so readily available in Britain?

International flavour
There’s no underestimating the success of Red Bull. In 2005 more than 2.5 billion cans of the high-energy potion, dubbed “the Porsche of soft drinks”, was consumed in over 130 countries. Despite these impressive stats, doubts have been raised by some health experts over whether the drink is safe.

Fuelling speculation are reports of a Red Bull ‘ban’ in a handful of countries. “Red Bull has not been banned in any country,” says a company spokesperson. “There are places where it has not been authorised yet. It takes a lot of time to get a new product with special ingredients in a complex composition through all the official channels."

It should also be noted that Red Bull isn’t the only product that has struggled to find its way onto shelves in these countries. For example, France has even refused to authorise some vitamin-fortified cereals made by Kellogg’s.

A load of Red Bull?
Critics of the drink frequently point towards Red Bull's caffeine content and just recently it was linked to the death of an 18-year-old Irish basketball player who died after apparently sharing four cans of the drink with his friends. However, one can of Red Bull contains 80mg of caffeine - the same as an average cup of coffee, and an inquest ruled that the boy's death was caused by sudden adult death syndrome.

In 2001 the Swedish National Food Administration issued a precautionary public warning about Red Bull following the deaths of three people who were thought to have consumed the drink shortly before dying.

“No authority has ever discovered or proven an unhealthy effect in or from Red Bull,” says the company spokesman. “We could only have such global sales because health authorities have concluded it is safe to consume. No one has ever shown a link between Red Bull and harmful effects.”

After independent scientific research, Britain’s Food Standards Agency believes energy drinks such as Red Bull are as safe as any other drinks for adults to consume in moderation.

“Red Bull has been authorised in the UK because it has been proven to be safe,” says Richard Laming from the British Soft Drinks Association. “The label states that it is high in caffeine and we always advise every kind of food and drink should be consumed within the context of a balanced diet."

Caffeine cocktail
“The bottom line is Red Bull’s caffeine content,” says Dr Frankie Phillips from the British Dietetic Association. “There are concerns over the effect high intakes of caffeine can have on people who are sensitive to it,” she says.

“An energy drink such as Red Bull could affect your heart rate, blood pressure and mood if you are caffeine-sensitive. Therefore caffeinated drinks could be potentially dangerous for these people."

“Caffeine can interrupt sleep patterns and a lack of good quality rest can impact on your overall well-being too,” she continues. “Red Bull also has a high calorie content and very little nutritional value."

Another issue with Red Bull is its “kick-start” cocktail of caffeine with taurine – a naturally occurring amino acid – and a carbohydrate called glucuronolactone. “No one knows what impact the combination of these three components can have on the body,” says Dr Phillips. “Individually caffeine, taurine and glucuronolactone are safe but it is unclear if they can have a different reaction when combined together."

However, in 2001, the Food Standards Agency concluded: “There is insufficient evidence to enable the setting of upper safe limits for levels of taurine and glucuronolactone in energy drinks or to support a ban on the use of these ingredients”.

The clubber’s choice
Despite being non-alcoholic, energy drinks are popular in clubs as a mixer to keep party animals going all night long. It is cause for concern if clubbers can extend their drinking time with ‘Red Bull cocktails' says Frank Soodeen from Alcohol Concern. “We would be worried if consumers are combining stimulant drinks with alcohol to heighten their drinking experience - especially if this results in drinking more that you would normally be capable of,” he says. One study apparently found mixing alcohol with energy drinks can mask the alcoholic effect. In other words, people can often feel less drunk than they really are.

The spokesman for Red Bull said: “There is no reason why Red Bull, like any other drink, should not be mixed with alcohol, as long as people do not underestimate that alcohol consumption might impair their mental and physical activities. Red Bull is not designed to counteract this. Excessive consumption of alcohol can have adverse effects on human health and behaviour, but it should be clear that this is due to the alcoholic drink – not the mixer.”

Should you or shouldn’t you?
Red Bull is the first to admit that this isn’t a drink for the caffeine sensitive. Pregnant women and children would also be wise to stay clear. “Because of the high sugar content and acidity in fizzy energy drinks dieticians would not recommend them,” says Dr Phillips.

“There isn’t a recommended daily amount for caffeine as you can live perfectly well without it. If you usually drink tea or coffee without any problems then it should be safe to have the occasional energy drink."
Windows Live

*
More information on Red Bull.
*
More on the alleged risks of energy drinks.
*
More information on caffeine.
*
More information on what to eat when you're pregnant.
*
More information on alcohol safety.

Protesters make bid to save "magic mushrooms"

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_c1PMtZ84MPw/Ry7pyFgGtGI/AAAAAAAAAUY/m5ZD0T2JUyk/s320/mushrooms.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5129294072301139042" />

Protesters make bid to save "magic mushrooms"
Mon Oct 29, 5:02 AM ET
AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - Protesters turned out on Amsterdam's central Dam Square on Saturday, hoping to stop the government from banning magic mushrooms and asking to "save the 'shrooms". Carrying banners reading "When will they ban bread?" and "Boss of your own brain", more than 100 people, some wearing hats resembling the bright red cap of the popular fly agaric variety, protested to keep hallucinogenic mushrooms legal.
After several incidents involving tourists -- in March, a French teenager jumped to her death from a bridge after taking mushrooms -- the Dutch government plans to ban them.
Arno Adelaars, author of a book on magic mushrooms, said this would only drive users underground and what was needed instead was better information how to use mushrooms right.
"It's only foreigners who have this problem, the Dutch don't because they have good information," he said.
"Amsterdam is like a pilgrimage for youngsters in Europe, they come here to get high in all kinds of ways.
"The typical young tourist that comes here drinks an awful lot of beer, smokes an awful lot of grass, and then takes mushrooms. Nuclear energy on a massive scale simply to buy us time, such energy being possibly the only practical and time-effective alternative to fossil fuels available to us right now;

2. Novel solutions like seeding huge clouds between the Earth and the Sun or superimposing giant sun-shade umbrellas suspended in space, etc.

I have a feeling that such solutions may be impractical and will not be adopted in time.

In my book Project Nirvana I described (somewhat tongue-in-cheek) the social consequences of adopting Supersoma (a plant-based euphoriant) on a mass scale to battle the addiction to alcohol that was killing Russia. I really thought this was a utopian idea and wrote about it largely to stimulate thinking and research in that direction.

In the second edition of Project Nirvana I plan to combine the euphoriant effect of Supersoma with a contraceptive action: a double whammy taking care of our primate pleasure-seeking habits that are driving our mad-hatter consumerism, as well as of our reproductive extravagance. I think it may be a more elegant (and less energy-intensive and expensive) solution than either nuclear energy or giant sun-shades in space. The development of human/plant photosynthesizing hybrids that will purge us of our destructive meat-eating and plant devouring habits will be the subject of my next book. The ideal would be to reduce the ecological footprint of Homo sapience to a negative value (in other words, we could become a Gaia-healing rather than Gaia destroying agents due to our very physiology).

But best of all – do something concrete, like becoming a vegetarian (I hear the screams of hungry, carnivorous stomachs!) This will have an immediate and greater net environmental effect than either getting a hybrid car or putting a solar panel on the roof.

Change of mind on magic mushrooms

Change of mind on magic mushrooms

David Charter, London | October 13, 2007
THE sale of hallucinogenic magic mushrooms is set to be banned by the Dutch Government in the latest sign of a conservative backlash against Amsterdam's relaxed attitude to sex and drugs.
A series of high-profile deaths and injuries linked to magic mushroom "trips" proved too much for ministers, who were expected to discuss prohibition proposals from Health Secretary Ab Klink at a cabinet meeting last night.
The move follows growing official impatience with the unforeseen consequences of traditional Dutch tolerance, which instead of normalising drug-taking and prostitution has drawn in people-traffickers, dealers and organised crime gangs from across Europe.
Mr Klink's push for a mushroom ban follows plans by the Mayor of Amsterdam for an "upgrade" of the city's infamous red light district, including closing many of its prostitute windows and coffee shops where cannabis is openly sold.
Fresh mushrooms -- as opposed to dried fungi, which are already banned -- are legally on sale at so-called smart shops, about 40 of which have sprung up in the capital selling herbal and chemical compounds.
The dramatic rethink in The Netherlands has followed a rise in medical emergencies in Amsterdam linked to mushroom use. Ambulance call-outs rose from 70 in 2005 to 128 last year, with nine out of 10 cases involving tourists.
In July, an 18-year-old from Iceland threw himself out of a hotel window, breaking both hislegs.
But what really caught the public imagination was the 17-year-old French girl who jumped from a bridge over one of Amsterdam's canals to her death in March, apparently under the influence of magic mushrooms.
Magic mushrooms are not addictive but can have severe psychological consequences.
A spokesman for the Amsterdam Drugs Advisory Bureau said: "This is not a mushroom problem, it is a tourist problem. But the ban would hit Dutch users."
Peter van Dijk, a researcher at the Utrecht-based Trimbos Institute, which studies drug addiction, said: "A mushroom is not very dangerous. It is not as toxic as, for example, heroin or cocaine." The real danger came from a blend of alcohol, cannabis and mushrooms, which led people "to do things they normally would not, like jumping out of windows".

Why I wrote Project Nirvana

<img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt;
Tobacco is the second major cause of death in the world. It is currently responsible for the death of one in ten adults worldwide (about 5 million deaths each year). If current smoking patterns continue, it will cause some 10 million deaths each year by 2020. Half the people that smoke today -that is about 650 million people- will eventually be killed by tobacco.

Some people thought after reading the first edition of Project Nirvana that I advocated legalisation or decriminalisation of some or all existing plants or drugs. This was not my intention at all. This article is written to explain my position and the intent of Project Nirvana. Nirvana is a book about human consciousness, political power, control of the mass consciousness, and the dual nature of science. It is also about our choice to either destroy life on Earth or to create viable and sustainable communities. Drugs and plants are just a means to explore these themes. I could have chosen the power of the censorship or the weapons of mass destruction.

     “A didactic, yet tightly-woven tale... follows in the footsteps of Zamyatin, Orwell, Huxley and Lem.” Dr Y.
